We started our courses in 1995. Throughout the years and with plenty of experience, it has become clear to us that our method works very well for people on the autistic spectrum and can support them in many ways.
Through our ongoing collaboration with psychologists in Hamburg, we met Aaron Wahl who had been diagnosed with Aspergers.
His experiences, his commitment and many shared intense conversations led to the decision to create a support system specifically for people on the autistic spectrum.
Aaron Wahl, born in 1990, was declared incapacitated for work in his early 20s. Since his ASD diagnosis he is fighting back to work. He founded the project “PEM Autism”, which aims to promote the strengths and abilities of autistics in school, education and at work and which wants to build bridges to educate neurotypical people about a positive view of autism.
He wrote his biography on his life experiences with ASD in 2019 with a foreword from professor tony attwood, doing readings and workshops in schools and continuing education at a non-profit center in Hamburg. Within a few months, the project received international response.
The drive of Aaron Wahl to pass on the method ot others on the spectrum is based on the facts that PEM:
- does not try to make Autistics to fit in
- does not interfere with the psyche
- does not define itself as a treatment of autism-expert
- does not want to ‘heal’ anything
- works without any support by drugs
- does not attempt to alter the personality
- and does not claim a universal validity
- puts the individual in the focus
- takes individual abilities into account
- is structured logically and comprehensibly
- shows tangible results after a few sessions
- is presented with respect and empathy
- is set in a surrounding where even the neurotypical people strive not to pretend and to take people as they are
the techniques are applicable simultaneously in private and working life and can operate as a bridge between those on the spectrum, their families and colleague, co-workers, teachers and employers.
The project has officially been established as non-profit organization in May 2017. Our training offers have been officially certified since July 2017.
Our method is used successfully in many countries in education, businesses and the field of personal development. In our experience, the PEM exercises can improve nearly every area of life lastingly, if practiced and applied regularly.
We make it our policy to constantly improve our processes. We have a clear definition of our customer profile and make it our aim to support our participants in their professional lives.
Our mission statement
The PEM Center in Hamburg is a centre for the Arts, Culture and Education. It is a non-profit organization and functions as a training, support and service centre for people in exceptional circumstances, public offices and social institutions.
“We support people.” This is the PEM Center’s guiding principle. We support employees threatened to become unemployed. We support underprivileged teenagers. We support the elderly and long-term unemployed who have difficulty getting back on the job market. It is our aim to provide them with new perspectives for their work and their lives.
Having a job and life-long learning are an essential part of our social lives. We support and accompany our participants in their professional endeavors and try to improve their individual perspectives.
We base our work on the positive image of humanism and assume that being part of a professional environment is seen as an important contribution to society and therefore creates personal fulfillment.
Furthermore, we believe in supporting the inclusion of migrants into the social and cultural life of Germany.
We commit to offering every customer of our facility extensive support in their education and integration in the job market.
The PEM Center is apolitical and not affiliated with any party, religion or ideology.
Our work follows ethical principles such as non-violence, emancipation, solidarity and self-determination. We work together on the basis of gender equality, collegiality, team spirit and loyalty.
We want to secure equal opportunities for men and women, offer equal access to our resources and work on the compatibility of family and work for all sexes.
Our training programs and projects have been devised to ensure our customers’ autonomy and self-responsibility for a self-determined life.
